The Thames Embankment

Below is a picture of the Northern Embankment (Victoria Embankment), the most well-known and runs from Westminster Bridge to Blackfriars Bridge. It was designed by the civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and completed between 1865 and 1870. The embankment was part of a larger project to improve London’s sanitation by enclosing large sewers beneath it, as well as to provide a broad roadway and public gardens. It reclaimed land from the Thames, and the project was vital in reducing flooding and improving the city’s hygiene.
